Why Shell Dredging

Built for Commercial Production — Not Prospecting

Most dredges sold today are designed for recreational gold prospecting. Shell Dredging builds something different: commercial jet suction placer systems engineered for operators who need real production, dependable fine gold recovery, and equipment that holds up in remote, demanding mining environments.

Every Shell dredge is custom-built to your site conditions. We work with operators before construction to match the platform, pump configuration, and recovery system to your water depth, material type, access constraints, and production goals.

What Every Shell Dredge Includes

  • Proprietary jet suction excavation — no sand pump required
  • Integrated concentrator/classifier recovery system
  • 5,000 PSI cutter-head for bedrock penetration
  • Fine gold recovery down to .006 — all three platforms
  • Central control room with full dredge visibility
  • Custom-built to your site specifications
Our Platforms

Three Dredge Sizes. One Commercial standard.

Each model shares the same Shell jet suction technology and integrated recovery system — scaled to match your throughput requirements and site conditions.

Entry Commercial

10-Inch Suction Dredge

Up to 150 Cu Yd / Hr · 3,600 Yd / Day

A production-capable commercial platform for operators evaluating jet suction dredging at a more accessible scale, without sacrificing Shell’s fine gold recovery.

  • 10-inch suction pipe diamete
  • Jet principle material transport — no sand pump
  • 150 cu yd/hr · 3,600 yd/day capacity
  • Integrated concentrator/classifier recovery
  • Custom-built to your property specifications

Mid-Scale Commercial

12-Inch Suction Dredge

Up to 250 Cu Yd / Hr · 6,000 Yd / Day

A versatile mid-scale platform for operations that need greater throughput and fine gold recovery at commercial scale without committing to a full large-scale system.

  • 12-inch suction pipe diameter
  • Jet principle material transport — no sand pump
  • 250 cu yd/hr · 6,000 yd/day capacity
  • Integrated concentrator/classifier recovery
  • Custom-built to your property specifications

Large-Scale Commercial

15-Inch Suction Dredge

Up to 400 Cu Yd / Hr · 9,600 Yd / Day

Shell’s flagship commercial platform and the largest suction dredge operating in Alaska, with 500 KW of onboard power and 5,000 PSI bedrock-cutting capability.

  • 15-inch suction pipe diameter
  • Jet principle material transport — no sand pump
  • 400 cu yd/hr · 9,400 yd/day capacity
  • Integrated concentrator/classifier recovery
  • Custom-built to your property specifications
Why Shell Dredging

The Largest Suction Dredge in Alaska

Shell Dredging’s 15-inch platform represents what the system is capable of at full commercial scale. Operating in Alaska, it stands as the largest suction dredge in the state, a benchmark that took decades of engineering refinement to reach.

It’s not the size that matters most. It’s what the size enables: continuous high-volume material processing, fine gold recovery at scale, and the ability to work ground that smaller equipment can’t economically justify.

The Shell System

How the Shell Dredge System Works

Unlike conventional placer equipment, the Shell jet suction system handles excavation, transport, and recovery in a single continuous operation. Here’s what makes it different at each stage.

What Operators and Geologists Say

No other dredge that I know of has the ability to process so much material at such a high gold extraction rate, and for these reasons, I would rate the Shell dredge as having the most efficient gold extraction system I have ever seen.

Jim Halloran

Alaska Professional Geologist — License #54

I was trained in the operation of the final recovery and clean-up of the Shell system and found it to be easy to understand and enjoyable, even fun, to sit and watch as it produced lots of fine gold.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Shell Dredging builds commercial jet suction placer dredges in three sizes: 10-inch, 12-inch, and 15-inch. Each platform is configured for different production requirements, site conditions, and throughput goals. We could build a 21 or 25″ that would do over 1000 yards an hour in production.

A jet suction dredge uses water pressure to excavate and transport gold-bearing material in a single continuous process, eliminating multiple handling steps common in conventional placer operations. Shell’s system integrates recovery directly into the same continuous flow.

Shell’s concentrator/classifier system is engineered to recover gold down to .006 fine, using a 5,000:1 reduction ratio. This level of fine gold recovery is difficult to achieve with conventional sluice or trommel setups.

On our 15-inch platform, the system is capable of processing up to 400 cubic yards of material per hour. Throughput on the 10-inch and 12-inch models varies by site conditions, contact us to discuss your specific requirements.

Yes. Every Shell dredge is custom-built to match your site conditions, material type, water depth, access constraints, and production goals. We work with operators before construction to make sure the system is right for the ground you’re working.

Shell Dredging has operational experience in Alaska and internationally, with offices in Wasilla, Alaska; Lakewood, Colorado; and West Perth, Australia. We work with operators in remote placer mining environments across multiple continents.
